I am no professional either but I read somewhere that 50D needs a veru good lens to exploit its features fully. Would you mind commenting on the lens you used for this comparison ?.
I used a brand new Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.. which is very highly rated for low light photography. And I used tripods for these amateur tests.
Again, I am no professional, so please dont take me word to word. But out of the 4 cameras I have tried till date (Rebel XSi, 40D, 50D, D90), D90 tops my list if I just look at the end image quality.
Even if you ignore all the other factors, D90 produced much controlled noise at similar settings. Canon 50D produced more noise (chroma) that I started hating. And I am not talking about per pixel sharpness because that is not directly comparable between the two because of different sensor resolutions.
I suggest you do more research before you buy wither. I also suggest you check out dxomark.com and compare the two models for sensor benchmarking.
I just received my new Canon 50D. I have to say that I am in love with this camera, no, it's not perfect. I would have loved to see a full frame CMOS sensor, but I can't have everything and price too!
